Practical Tools for Disciple-Making: Evangelism (Part 1)

09.27.18 | by Larry Gates

The next several series of issues of the Disciple-Maker’s Forum will be devoted to some very practical tools a disciple-maker can use in helping another person navigate their spiritual journey.  We’ll first beginning by looking at various tools a disciple-maker can use with individuals in the exploratory phase of their journey in which they are discovering the claims of the gospel message.

In this issue we will be looking at a tool called the Romans Road to Salvation.  This particular tool examines essential passages exclusively from the Book of Romans that provide stepping stones on a pathway that leads to God’s saving grace through Jesus Christ.  The version of the Romans Road presented below has been modified slightly from the original version by adding a couple of other passages from the Book of Romans viewed as essential in illuminating the pathway to salvation.

    Romans Road 2.0

The Apostle Paul in his letter to the saints in Rome indicates that saving faith comes by hearing the gospel message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ (Romans 10:17). Paul notes that the lost cannot come to belief in Christ for salvation unless someone tell them about Christ and that cannot occur unless someone is sent (Romans 10:14-15). Being sent is God mission for all followers of Jesus.  As Christ’s ambassador, God has entrusted to each of his children the ministry of reconciliation.  God has given us the responsibility of sharing his message of reconciliation to all who are far from him and alien to his kingdom (2 Corinthians 5:16-20).  So as God’s messenger of reconciliation let’s follow the pathway to salvation along the Romans Road step by step.

    • The Human Condition

√ Romans 3:10 – “There is no one righteous, not even one.”

√ Romans 3:23 – “All have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God.”

    • Sin’s Penalty

√ Romans 6:23a – “For the wages of sin is death.”

    • God’s Provision

√ Romans 6:23b – “…But the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

√ Romans 5:8 – “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this:  While we were still      sinners Christ died for us.”

    • The Personal Response

√ Romans 10:9-10 – “If you confess with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.  For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.”

√ Romans 10:13 – “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
